Did you know there’s no legal regulation or governance in using the words ‘natural’ or ‘eco-friendly’ on product labels?
That means manufacturers can use those words in their packaging and marketing without validating the truth of their statements.
We call this greenwashing. It’s the act of conveying that a product is more socially or environmentally sound that it actually is.
In March 2016, we began tackling this issue by conducting research into products, retail regulation, accreditations, materials, supply chains and chemical databases around the world.
In 2017, we used our research to assess personal care and cleaning products. We sold products that passed our assessment in an online store, helping you identify truly natural and sustainable products for your home.
In 2020, we closed our online store, continued to advertise the products that passed our assessment, and deepened our research with the goal of putting our standard in your back pocket.
Meet the Sustainability Scanner
Over the years, we’ve received hundreds of enquiries for product assessments from our community and the industry. We love these requests! And it’s made us certain that we need to put our standard in your hands so you can pull the sustainability score of any product you find on the supermarket shelves and beyond.
We’ve been working hard to make this a reality and in 2021, we’ll be launching the Sustainability Scanner – an app that allows you to scan product barcodes to retrieve easy-to-understand information on the social and environmental qualifications of a product.
The bigger picture
We’re here to stop greenwashing in its tracks and help you navigate the confusing world of ‘natural’ and ‘eco-friendly’ product labelling.
In doing so, our mission is to be part of the conversation and change needed to meet the requirements of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production.
Our goal is to build a unified voice of retailers and regulators, and to make the scientific information easy to understand at a snapshot (more on that coming soon!), to make sustainable shopping simple for everyone because our world needs us to shop better.
