By composting your food scraps instead of sending them to landfill, households can significantly reduce their Climate Change footprint. In fact, about 3% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from organic matter rotting anaerobically (without air) in landfills. To put that in context, that is about as much as the entire country’s aviation industry.
Fill the unit with food scraps, eggshells, loose leaf tea and coffee grounds. Dairy and animal products are not recommended.
Once full transfer to your larger outdoor unit for further decomposing before it can be used to enrich your soil and your garden.
If you don’t have a garden or outdoor unit, contact your council to see if compost can be separated from your regular rubbish (don’t put it in your vegetation bin as it can’t be separated and will contaminate it).
From July 2019, the NSW Northern Beaches Council will be able to separate compost from other materials in the red top bins. Therefore, compost can be placed in a compostable bag (such as If You Care Compostable Food Waste Bags) and into the red top bins.
