Plant-based christmas recipes that will impress everyone


Walking around my hometown of Sydney during the catastrophic bushfire season of November 2019 was a stark reminder of just how real and dire the climate crisis is. Wildfires were ravaging New South Wales and other parts of Australia, and the thick smoke blanketed our beautiful city. We had been warned to stay indoors, because the air quality had reached such hazardous levels.

I observed hundreds of people walking around smoke-filled streets with face masks on, myself included. I visited eight different stores trying to buy an air purifier, along with everyone else it seemed, because every shop I walked into had sold out. It wasn’t until I went into the ninth store that I managed to buy the last one in stock and I was so grateful. Others were lining up only to walk out empty handed. Makeshift animal hospitals were being erected around parts of the state to treat the koalas (at least the ones we had left), and other wildlife affected by the fires. People were panicking and quite rightly, it was only the first week of summer. We knew it was likely to get worse. A lot worse.

Climate change, global overpopulation, pollution and mass extinction is real and upon us like never before, but we have been warned. Again and again. You read it, you hear it, over and over – society in general blaming global leaders for their lack of action. And I agree, totally. But at the end of the day, there is no point in only blaming others. After all, it’s the demands of society that drives the decisions of governments. Yes, I hate to be the bearer of bad news… that’s you and me.

We all want change, but no one wants to change.

It’s no longer deniable that global animal agriculture and societies love for meat and dairy products is high up on the list of causes of our planet’s demise.

“Livestock is the world’s largest user of land resources, with pasture and arable land dedicated to the production of feed representing almost 80% of the total agricultural land. One-third of global arable land is used to grow feed, while 26% of the Earth’s ice-free terrestrial surface is used for grazing.” (1)

According to University of Oxford researcher, Joseph Poore, “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use…..It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions. So, we’ve established that animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to global warming, but the good news is, unlike shutting down a global fossil fuel company like Exon Mobil, there’s a solution to fixing this problem – we can reduce our intake of animal products and increase the plant products we consume. It really is that simple!

What are the advantages of getting more plants in your diet?

Another major advantage of reducing animal products and increasing plant foods is that it comes with great health benefits, so it’s a win, win.

The recent Global Burden of Disease Study 2017 (3) found that 22 percent of deaths worldwide, that’s 11 million a year, are due to poor diet choices. Eating a diet high in red and processed meat made the list of the top 15 dietary factors in death, but so too did high sodium intake and inadequate intake of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts and seeds. The bottom line is, piling your plate with whole plant-based foods lowers your risk of disease.

So, we know humans can thrive on a well balanced plant-based diet (4) and you can get all the healthy fats, protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and amino acids you need from plant based sources, with the exception of vitamin B12(5). With all of the above in mind, there is no better time like the present to ramp up the plants on your plate.

With all the conflicting information out there it’s no wonder people feel overwhelmed and confused around plant-based eating. I honestly think it’s the reason people put it into the ‘too hard basket’. By far, the most common question I get is:

“But, where do I start?”
