A new scheme to help hundreds of people improve their mental health through being in nature has been launched in the UK.
The Blue Prescribing initiative at the WWT London Wetland Centre will allow up to 300 people to take part in a six-week nature-based health programme in London, offering activities such as birdwatching, nature walks and habitat protection work. Participants will be assessed during the programme using medical questionnaires.
The scheme has launched in response to growing evidence that being in nature can reduce stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression. A survey for the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) by YouGov of more than 4,000 adults found that 65 percent of respondents say they found being near the coast, rivers, lakes and ponds had a positive impact on their mental health.
